Removing trees in your backyard might seem like a simple weekend job that many of us enjoy. However, there are some rules and regulations within the ACT that you need to be aware of.
Tree pruning, tree removal and tree surgery work on trees of a certain size in the Australian Capital Territory region does require the approval of (TAMS) Territory and Municipal Services Tree Protection Unit.
This includes, but is not limited to trees in your front yard, back garden and grass verge. This requires a tree survey and a report from qualified arborists such as Low Cut Tree Services Canberra.
This Regulation applies to the following:
- Trees over 12m tall or with a canopy of 12m or more in width and/or
- Trees with a trunk circumference of 1,5 m or more, 1 m above the natural ground level and/or trees with two or more trunks and a total circumference of all trunks, 1 m above the natural ground level, of 1,5 m or more.
If this is an emergency and the tree in question poses a risk to life, property or animals, you may apply for an Urgent Circumstances Authorization.
Low Cut Tree Services may apply to the Territory and Municipal Services Tree Protection Unit on your behalf.
In an emergency situation, Territory and Municipal Services recommends that the tree surgeon undertake the work to approve the request for urgent circumstances.
Please contact Canberra Connect on 13 22 81 at any time of day or night to obtain an Urgent Circumstances Authorization. Depending on the risk, you may be granted on the spot approval.
